Members of the Berkeley Police Department will be present to update us on current crime trends (up in 2015 after years in decline) and what we can do to help prevent crime in our neighborhood; there will also be a brief segment on disaster preparedness. Please join us for this important meeting. The meeting will start and end on time.

October 2015 is Berkeley Emergency Preparedness Month. You can take simple and affordable steps the whole month, in less than 10 minutes, or for less than $10, to make yourself, your family, and our Berkeley community safer in case of earthquakes, wildfires, and other emergencies.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS EVENTS FOR HOUSEHOLDS, NEIGHBORHOODS
Every Step Toward Preparedness Helps

Get involved this October in number of activities to prepare yourself, your household, and your neighborhood for emergencies, a critical step in a region threatened by wildfires and earthquakes.
Each week in October has a preparedness theme with activities that can be performed to increase readiness for a disaster. These themes include emergency notifications and communications, fire safety, home earthquake readiness, and creative food options after disasters.
The need for preparation has been emphasized in recent months with wildfires ravaging parts of California and even a modest earthquake striking near the Berkeley-Oakland border. The disaster preparation events include the Berkeley's Citywide Exercise on Saturday, October 17th, an opportunity for the community to practice disaster skills together. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., households and neighborhood groups will take action in their own homes and communities [EditorÕs note: See item 3 for details on our Halcyon neighborhood part of the exercise from 9 to 10:30 a.m. that day.]. Each neighborhood and household can choose its own preparedness activities to fit their situation. Community members can find ideas for how to be involved and sign up for the exercise at the Preparedness Month website. Some activities are as short as 20 minutes. Any amount of time spent preparing is valuable.
Activity Guides provide step-by-step instructions on topics that include: storing food and water; improving home safety for renters and homeowners; preparedness for children and pets; and setting up an emergency communications system. Several of these guides will be available in Spanish as well as English. In addition to the website, community members can pick up printed preparedness materials with information for seniors and people with disabilities, as well as children's activity books in both Spanish and English at locations around Berkeley.
Berkeley Emergency Preparedness Month is a partnership between the City's Office of Emergency Services and members of the City's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, volunteers who have been trained with basic emergency skills to lessen the effects of a disaster and help sustain themselves until assistance can arrive. Volunteers NEEDED
10/17 Citywide Exercise Debriefing: After the Citywide Emergency Exercise on 10/17, a debrief session will be an opportunity to thank community participants for their efforts in getting themselves, their families, and the neighborhoods more prepared for emergencies. The event is sponsored by the City of Berkeley but is volunteer run. Volunteers will help support logistics of the event including set-up, sign-in table staffing, ushering, clean-up. Volunteers needed anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m, on October 17 at the West Berkeley Bowl (920 Heinz Ave.). Email Shawn at pelecon@aol.com to sign up to help.
10/28 Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Patient Surge Exercise: Alta Bates Campus needs volunteers to participate as patients. Having live persons simulate casualties helps us evaluate our capabilities to manage a large influx of patients during disasters. Volunteer patients will experience mass casualty triage and help provide comment as to the patient experience during disasters. 10/4 or 10/18 or 11/1 – Berkeley Fire Department: The
Fire Department is organizing a full-scale BART drill, which will simulate an
emergency in the Berkeley BART tunnel system. This drill will involve a
multi-patient component that will test firefighterÕs ability to triage, treat
and transport a large number of patients from the incident. The Fire Department
is seeking volunteers to act as patients for this exercise. Volunteers
must be available on the day of the exercise from 0400 (a.m.) to 0730 (a.m.). Click here

Chat with neighbors & UC student volunteers from CalÕs Berkeley Project while we weed, mulch, pick up trash, and remove graffiti in the park and surrounding neighborhood. Please bring weeding and trimming tools (with labels) if you have them (extra tools will be available if you donÕt). LetÕs get our precious common space ready for the winter months!
Note: If thereÕs a public area in the larger neighborhood where youÕd especially like to see trash picked up or graffiti removed, please consider volunteering for an hour to lead a student crew out to clean it up! We will have plenty of volunteer help, but we depend on neighbors to guide the process so we get as much done as possible.

Ruby Beaupre is our new Marketing and Community Relations Team Leader; sheÕs
very active in supporting the HNA community events with food donations at the
various events and work parties held in the neighborhood. If youÕd like to be

neighborhood-WFM meetings (and to notify neighbors when work is being done at the

This meeting will include information on November and December holiday logistics.
These meetings are held at the Community Table
at the front of the store, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing
changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing
issues we discuss [with HNA reps and nearby neighbors]. The Store Team Leader
is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be
complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues
that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor.
As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. EditorÕs note: LetÕs keep moving toward a kid-friendly Halcyon Halloween! Bring your kids to the annual Halloween Parade around the park prior to trick-or-treating (or come provide an audience). See Wheeler Street neighbor Susan SnyderÕs announcement below about the parade. We encourage neighbors to put out some pumpkins and answer the door on Halloween! (Or leave lights out if you donÕt want to participate; although ordinarily we ask that neighbors leave their porch lights on for neighborhood-watch purposes, Halloween is the exception.)
